Mid-Year, Full Life: Your July Wellness Reset for Breast Health

As the sun shines high and summer hits its stride, it’s important we reflect and see July as more than just beach days and BBQs—it’s the perfect time to check in with yourself and reset your health goals for the second half of the year. At the American Breast Cancer Foundation (ABCF), we’re using this month to remind you that your breast health deserves to be part of your wellness routine year-round.

We’re not here to focus on resolutions or restrictions. Instead, let’s start with small, powerful choices that help protect your health.

Healthy Habits, Healthy Breasts

Research shows that certain lifestyle choices can reduce the risk of breast cancer. You don’t need a total overhaul—just a few mindful adjustments can make a real difference:

  • Nourish yourself with a balanced diet full of colorful fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats.
  • Keep moving—whether it’s a morning walk, a dance class, or a swim, regular physical activity is linked to lower breast cancer risk.
  • Stay hydrated to support your overall health. Your body (and skin) will thank you.

Limit alcohol consumption—even a few fewer drinks per week can lower your risk.

Know Your Normal

When it comes to early detection, no one knows your body like you do. That’s why we encourage everyone—regardless of age—to become familiar with their own “normal” and check in regularly.

Here’s how to start:

  • Perform a monthly self-check at the same time each cycle.
  • Look for lumps, skin dimpling, swelling, or unusual changes in or around the breast or underarm area.
  • Watch for nipple discharge, inversion, or skin that looks red or irritated.

And if something feels off—say something. Talk to your healthcare provider. There’s no concern too small when it comes to your health.

Summer of Screening

Haven’t had a mammogram in a while? Now’s the time to schedule it. July is the perfect “catch-up month” before the hustle of fall sets in.

Through ABCF’s Mammogram Assistance Program, we provide grants to help cover the cost of screenings and diagnostics for those who are uninsured or facing financial hardship. If you—or someone you love—needs help accessing care, learn more and apply here.

Facts for the Under-40 Crowd

Think breast cancer only affects older women? Think again.

  • While routine mammograms are often recommended starting at age 40, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime—and younger women and men can be affected too.
  • Black women under 40 are twice as likely to die from breast cancer compared to white women the same age.
  • Certain genetic mutations, like BRCA1/2, can significantly increase risk at a younger age.
  • For those not eligible for mammograms yet, knowing your family history, genetic risk factors, and how your body feels is crucial.

If you’re under 40, don’t wait. Ask questions, stay informed, and be proactive.

Your Mid-Year Reminder: You Matter

This July, give yourself permission to reset—without guilt, without pressure. Your wellness matters. Your peace of mind matters. Your health matters.

At ABCF, we’re here to walk with you every step of the way—from prevention and education to screening and support. Let’s make the second half of this year stronger, healthier, and more empowered—together.

Take care of your body. Know your normal. Ask the questions. Book the appointment. Share the knowledge.

Because early detection starts with you.
