From Awareness to Access

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, take the next step.

Every October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month brings renewed attention to the importance of breast health, screening and early detection.

Pink ribbons, community events and conversations help keep breast cancer in the public eye. But awareness is only the beginning.

Knowing your risk matters. Understanding the importance of mammograms matters. What matters just as much is being able to take the next step.

When cost stands between you and care

Being told you need a mammogram or additional diagnostic testing shouldn’t leave you wondering how you’re going to pay for it.

Yet for people who are uninsured, underinsured or facing high out-of-pocket costs, financial concerns can delay screening and follow-up care.

The American Breast Cancer Foundation (ABCF) helps address this barrier through its Breast Cancer Assistance Program (BCAP), which provides financial assistance for breast cancer screening and diagnostic services to eligible individuals.

If cost has caused you or someone you know to postpone care, ABCF may be able to help.

Access to care isn’t equal

Financial challenges are only part of the picture. Insurance status, language, geography and other barriers can affect whether someone receives timely screening and diagnostic services.

These challenges are especially important in underserved communities, where understanding the need for care doesn’t always mean having a clear path to receiving it.

ABCF works to connect individuals with information, resources and assistance that can help make that next step possible.

Your next step can make a difference

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is also an opportunity to support others.

Schedule a screening if you’re due. Share a breast health resource with someone who may need it. Encourage a friend or family member to talk with their healthcare provider. Host a fundraiser, support a community event or make a donation.

Each action can help bring information and resources to more people.
Know your risk. Get screened. And if cost is standing in the way, know that help may be available.
