Courtney Curtin, 34, underwent risk-reducing surgery -- in just one day.

The new approach, called "Breast in a Day" by doctors at NYU Langone, includes both mastectomy and reconstruction in just one surgery.

For Curtin, the decision to get a masectomy was preventative, based on a strong family history of breast cancer and the presence of the BRCA1 gene.

By undergoing the precenataiver masectomy, Curtin reduced her chacnes of getting breast cancer from 60 percent to 1 percent.

“I feel like I took control. I feel like, I got this. I got through this. You know: I beat you, breast cancer. You didn't beat me,” she said.

NYU Langone has offered the "Breast in a Day" surgery for more than 5 years. Approximatley 1 out of 10 women are good candidates for the procedure.
